We woke up really early on Saturday and took to the streets to try to find a place to exchange USD for VND. Brian was able to take some money out of the ATM here and we set off to find coffee and something for breakfast. I wasn't feeling very good, I was overwhelmed and tired and had developed symptoms of a head cold. I was feeling really down about being away from home and the cold only made me feel worse. We were getting lots of stares in the streets and had to endure the "tourist tax" for most of our purchases.
The streets were extremely busy even at 7am on a Saturday! There were motorbikes everywhere. We found a small cafe on the way back up the street and had vietnamese coffee on the go. We then stopped at a restaurant near our apartment that had banh mi and fruit juice sodas (an excellent breakfast) and came back to relax. I still wasn't feeling good physically so we set out to find a pharmacy with over the counter cold medicine. There's a circle K here but they don't sell pharmaceuticals! Finally, we spotted a shop with the + out front and with some gesturing and a bit of vietnamese I secured some "cough medicine" (it really does work but it's not something you'd ever see in the states). I was laid out most of the day with upset tummy and head cold. Brian and I went out for lunch and had rice paper rolls stuffed with pork (yum!).
Brian left me to rest and went on his own adventure across town (he'll be writing a post soon i'm sure) and then came back to hang out with me before going to get us some dinner.
I didn't sleep last night but I woke up feeling much better and much more excited to be here in Vietnam! I'm worried about making friends so we have more stuff to do but that should come in time. Tomorrow I am going to the main office of my school to talk about teaching and I should know when I start after that!
